God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a human being, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? – Numbers 23:19

I cannot carry out my fierce anger! I cannot totally destroy Ephraim! Because I am God, and not man– the Holy One among you – I will not come in wrath! – Hosea 11:9

Muslims often use these two verses of the Bible to prove that Jesus cannot be God since these two verses clearly state that “God is not a man”. (Please click here to see how Numbers 23 actually proves Allah, god of Islam, is a man)

Let’s point out the flaws of this objection:

1 – No Christian believes that God is a man.

2 – Christians believe in Jesus as 100% God and 100% man.

How is that possible you may ask? Well, if that’s impossible then God is not God who can do anything without ceasing being God. Jesus is 100% God because He is the Word who became flesh (John 1:1, 14). He was 100% man because He was born of a woman. He had to be a man to be a bonafide sacrifice for the sins of men (Hebrews 2:9-10). The person who died on that Cross was the man Jesus Christ. Yes, God did not die on that Cross but the man Jesus did.

3 – To be a man is not the same as to become a man. God became a man (John 1: 1, 14), not is a man. In the Old Testament for example, He took a form of man (Genesis 18), not that He became a man.

Furthermore, if we examine Numbers 23:19 and Hosea 11:9 closely, we see that God is comparing Himself with men’s behavior (they lie, they change their mind, they can destroy the people that anger them), not being.

Numbers 23:19 says,

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a human being that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it?”

God is not a man, in a sense that:

1 – He cannot lie like men do (which by the way Muslims have hard time to understand since Allah is the greatest deceiver according to Surah 3:54, but the Bible calls Satan as the Father of lies/deceptions – John 8:44, Revelation 12:9)

2 – He does not change His mind like men do (Again, Allah can change his mind any time he wants according to Surah 2:106, that’s why Muslims cannot understand this maybe).

Hosea 11:9 says,

I cannot carry out my fierce anger! I cannot totally destroy Ephraim! Because I am God, and not man – the Holy One among you – I will not come in wrath!”

God is not a man, in a sense that:

1 – He cannot carry out a fierce anger like men do (But Allah can, according to Surah 8:12-13, that’s another reason, maybe, why Muslims can’t seem to understand the true God).

2 – He cannot destroy as men do.

In case Muslims want to bring up the violence in the Old Testament, then they were justified because of their disobedience (the Israelites) since the laws say they will be punished if they disobey them, but there are no such justification in the Qur’an. Allah only wants to kill people because they don’t believe in Him (Surah 9:5, 29). Nowhere in the entire Bible did God kill people because they didn’t believe in Him nor did He tell the Israelites to kill the unbelievers simply because they are unbelievers, rather because they didn’t listened to His warnings from their evil deeds; which by the way, He tolerated for 400 years (Genesis 15:6).

I invite Muslims to receive Jesus into their hearts and lives. Please click here.
