Muslims deny the Deity of Christ because of the ignorance of Allah/Muhammad about what “Christ” is all about. The Jews deny that Jesus is “the Christ” because they know that Christ is a divine figure. This is a dilemma in Islam, Muslims believe that Jesus is the Christ, yet deny His Divinity. Further mistake, the Qur’an states that the Jews call Jesus, the Christ (Qur’an 4:157).
However, the Qur’an implicates that Christ is indeed divine based on some of its verses. Below we are going to show some of those passages and these are the answers to Muslims’ question, “Where does Jesus say I am God, worship me”?
Of course, we can ask Muslims a question as well: “Where does Jesus say I am not God, don’t worship me?”which they won’t find anywhere. They deny His divinity simply because of the denial of the Qur’an and some of His statements from the Bible (that they take out of context).
I don’t believe the Qur’an to be from God, but since Muslims believe it, I am going to quote and compare it to some of Jesus’ attributes with the attributes of God in the Qur’an to find out whether or not His own words imply that He is divine.
1 – Who is “The first and the last”?
He is the First and the Last, and the Outward and the Inward; and He is Knower of all things.– Qur’an 57.3
This verse from the Qur’an suggests that Allah is the first and the last. Did Jesus claim to possess this attribute of God? Yes, He did.
17 When I saw him (Jesus), I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me, saying, “Don’t be afraid. I am the first and the last, 18 and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever more. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades. – Revelation 1:17-18
This proves that Jesus is God since no human being can claim to be the first and the last. Jesus also claimed to have had the glory of God BEFORE the creation:
Now, Father, glorify me with your own self with the glory which I HAD WITH YOU before the world existed. – John 17:5
2 – Who is “the Forgiver of sins”?
“Who can forgive sins except Allah” – Qur’an 3.135
As we see, the Qur’an agrees that only God can forgive sins. So we ask; did Jesus forgive sins? Yes, He did.
5 Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.” 6 But there were some of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak blasphemies like that? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” – Mark 2:5-7
The scribes agree with the Qur’an that only God can forgive sins and called Jesus blasphemous. So, this implies that Jesus claimed to be God.
3 – Who is “The truth and the Life Giver”?
6. That is because Allah, He is the Truth(Arabic: Al-Hak). Lo! He gives life to the dead and lo! He is Able to do all things; 7. And because the Hour will come, there is no doubt thereof; and because Allah will raise those who are in the graves.– Qur’an 22:6-7
These Qur’anic verses show that Allah is the truth and gives life to the dead. We ask again, did Jesus make the same claim about Himself? Yes, He did.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. – John 14:6
For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son(Jesus) ALSO gives life to whom he desires. – John 5:21
1 Jesus said these things, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may also glorify you; 2 even as you gave him authority over all flesh, he (the Son, Jesus) will give eternal life to all whom you have given him. – John 17:1-2
28 I(Jesus) give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” – John 10:28-30
4 – Is the word of God “eternal”? (All Muslims would say “YES”)
O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an apostle of Allah, and his words, which He bestowed on Mary, and a Spirit proceeding from Him: So believe in Allah and His apostles. Say not “Trinity”: desist: It will be better for you: For Allah is One God: Glory be to Him: (Far Exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs. – Qur’an 4:171
According to this verse, Jesus is God’s Word, yet they say He is not eternal but the Word is? Inconsistency at its best!
Does the Bible say that Jesus is God’s Word? Yes, it does and suggests that God’s Word is eternal as well.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…14 The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. – John 1:1, 14
Jesus was the incarnated Word of God (God),
Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is great: God was revealed in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, and received up in glory. – 1Timothy 3:16
