This article is for those who reject the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ to be biblical (Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Muslims…). It amazes me how these cult groups come to believe what they believe when the Bible clearly shows that the Jews wanted and eventually killed Jesus for blasphemy, yet deny the Deity of Christ:
5:16 For this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Sabbath.5:17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, so I am working, too.” 5:18 For this cause therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God…8:58 Jesus said to them, “Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM. 8:59 Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden, and went out of the temple, having gone through the middle of them, and so passed by…10:30 I and the Father are one. 10:31 Therefore Jews took up stones again to stone him. 10:32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of those works do you stone me?” 10:33 The Jews answered him, “We don’t stone you for a good work, but for blasphemy: because you, being a man, make yourself God.” – John 5:16, 8:58-59; 10:30-33
Did Jesus apologise and say that He didn’t mean to say He is God? NO.
63 But Jesus held his peace. The high priest answered him, “I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, “You have said it. Nevertheless, I tell you, after this you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of the sky.” 65 Then the high priest tore his clothing, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Behold, now you have heard his blasphemy.66 What do you think?” They answered, “He is worthy of death!” 67 Then they spit in his face and beat him with their fists, and some slapped him – Matthew 26:63-67
Again, if Jesus was/isn’t God, then why would He want to get killed for a lie?
Here are comparisons between Yahweh God and the Lord Jesus Christ:
JESUS is King of kings and Lord of lords
6:13 I command you before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate testified the good confession, 6:14 that you keep the commandment without spot, blameless, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ; 6:15 which in its own times he will show, who is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings, and Lord of lords. – 1Timothy 6:13-15 (cf. Matthew 2:1-2; Revelation 17:14, 19:16)
This is a title of Yahweh God:
With trumpets and sound of the ram’s horn, make a joyful noise before the King, Yahweh. – Psalm 98:6 (cf. Isaiah 6:5, 33:22, 41:21, 43:15, 44:6; Zephaniah 3:15…)
For Yahweh your God, he is God of gods, and Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty, and the awesome, who doesn’t respect persons, nor takes reward. – Deuteronomy 10:17 (cf. Psalm 136:3)
Who is the King/Lord of glory?
None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. – 1 Corinthians 2:8
My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. – James 2:1
Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? Yahweh, strong and mighty, Yahweh, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? Yahweh of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah – Psalm 24:7-10
And I will be to her a wall of fire all around, declares Yahweh, and I will be the glory in her midst. – Zechariah 2:5
JESUS is the Savior
1:3 but in his own time revealed his word in the message with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior; 1:4 to Titus, my true child according to a common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior…2:13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ…3:4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared, 3:5 not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 3:6 whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior – Titus 1:3-4; 2:13; 3:4-6 (cf. Matthew 1:21; 2Timothy 1:10, 1Timothy 1:1, 15; Acts 4:12, 13:23; John 3:16, 10:9…)
Yahweh God said He is the Only Savior:
I myself am Yahweh; and besides me there is no Savior. – Isaiah 43:11 (cf. Hosea 13:4; Isaiah 45:15; 49:26; 60:16)
Salvation is calling on the Name of Jesus
13 For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him whom they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:13-14)
The same thing is said about Yahweh God by Joel
It will happen that whoever will call on Yahweh’s name shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as Yahweh has said, and among the remnant, those whom Yahweh calls.(Joel 2:32)
Who will save the children of Israel?
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name JESUS, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us). – Matthew 1:21-23
O Israel, hope in Yahweh! For with Yahweh there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities. – Psalm 130:7-8
Say to those who have an anxious heart, ‘Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you. – Isaiah 35:4
JESUS is the Creator
1:1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God. 1:3 All things were made through him. Without him was not anything made that has been made. – John 1:1-3
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” – Colossians 1:16-17
“But in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” – Hebrews 1:2-3
Yahweh God made this claim in the Old Testament
Yahweh, your Redeemer, and he who formed you from the womb says: “I am Yahweh, who makes all things; who alone stretches out the heavens; who spreads out the earth by myself – Isaiah 44:24
You are Yahweh, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.” – Nehemiah 9:6
JESUS is the Rock
And all drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them and the rock was Christ. – 1 Corinthians 10:4
But Yahweh God claimed that He is the only Rock
Don’t fear, neither be afraid. Haven’t I declared it to you long ago, and shown it? You are my witnesses. Is there a God besides me? Indeed, there is not. I don’t know any other Rock. – Isaiah 44:8
JESUS is the Sanctifier
“to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.” – Acts 26:18
“He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption.” – 1 Corinthians 1:30
“And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” – 1 Corinthians 6:11
“For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,” – Hebrews 2:11
“And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” – Hebrews 10:10
“Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:” – 2Peter 1:1
This is an attribute reserved only to Yahweh God
“You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, Yahweh, sanctify you.’” – Exodus 31:13
“Declare and present your case; let them take counsel together! Who told this long ago? Who declared it of old? Was it not I, Yahweh? And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none besides me. Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance. Only in Yahweh, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength; to him shall come and be ashamed all who were incensed against him. In Yahweh all the offspring of Israel shall be justified and shall glory.” – Isaiah 45:21-25
“Then the nations will know that I am Yahweh who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.” – Ezekiel 37:28
JESUS is our life
“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” – Colossians 3:3-4
This is what Moses said about Yahweh God
“loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.” – Deuteronomy 30:20
JESUS is the Redeemer
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world; 13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ; 14 who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works. (Titus 2:11-14)
Yahweh God is the Redeemer
The Spirit of Christ is the Spirit of God
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets sought and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, 11 searching for who or what kind of time the Spirit of Christ, which was in them, pointed to, when he predicted the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that would follow them. 12 To them it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to you, they ministered these things, which now have been announced to you through those who preached the Good News to you by the Holy Spirit sent out from heaven; which things angels desire to look into. (1Peter 1:10-12)
The words of the prophets
Yahweh’s Spirit spoke by me. His word was on my tongue. (2Samuel 23:2)
20 You gave also your good Spirit to instruct them, and didn’t withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst…30 Yet many years you put up with them, and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet would they not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. (Nehemiah 9:20, 30)
Who’s word is eternal?
Your word, O Yahweh, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. – Psalm 119:89
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever. – Isaiah 40:8
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. – Mark 13:31 (cf. Matthew 24:35)
JESUS claimed that He can do whatever the Father (God) can do (John 5:19, 21)
God calms the storm:
He makes the storm a calm, so that its waves are still.– Psalm 107:29
He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. – Mark 4:39
JESUS claimed to have existed before He was born in Bethlehem
“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “Before Abraham was born, I AM!” At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds. (John 8:58-59)
The claim included the term “I am” – a reference God made of Himself when talking to Moses (Exodus 3:14); it’s the same Greek word “Ego Eimi”. The Jews immediately recognized that Jesus was claiming to be God and attempted to stone Him (John 8:59).
And now, Father, glorify me at your side with the glory I HAD with you BEFORE the world was created. (John 17: 5)
JESUS claimed to have shared God’s glory with the Father
17:1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he looked upward to heaven and said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, so that your Son may glorify you – 17:2 just as you have given him authority over all humanity, so that he may give eternallife to everyone you have given him. 17:3 Now this is eternal life – that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent. 17:4 I glorified you on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me at your side with the glory I HAD with you before the world was created. (John 17:1-5)
The blood of JESUS is God’s own blood
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he (God) hath purchased with his own blood. (Acts 20:28)
JESUS is the First and the Last, which is one of God’s title
1:17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me, saying, “Don’t be afraid. I am the first and the last, 1:18 and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever more. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades…2:8 “To the angel of the assembly in Smyrna write: “The first and the last, who was dead, and has come to life says these things. (Revelation 1:17-18; 2:8)
JESUS claimed to have sent the prophets/will send
34 “Therefore, behold, I (Jesus) am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city,…37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I (Jesus) would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not! (Matthew 23:34, 37)
However, the Old Testament indicates that God sent the prophets (Judges 6:8; Zechariah 7:12; 2 Chronicles 25:15; Jeremiah 1:5, 7:25, 25:4, 26:5, 28:9, 29:19, 44:4; Daniel 9:10; Haggai 1:12; 2 Chronicles 24:19). Therefore, Jesus was claiming the authority that was previously reserved only for God.
JESUS claimed that His origins are from heaven, whereas men are from the world
“And no one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven, even the Son of Man. (John 3:13)
And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. (John 8:23)
Not only did Jesus claim to come from heaven, but He said that it was “His kingdom”
Isn’t heaven God’s kingdom?
That you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (Luke 22:30)
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting, that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.” (John 18:36)
JESUS also claimed that He had “all authority… in heaven and on earth”
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority HAS BEEN GIVEN to Me in heaven and on earth.” (Matthew 28:18)
And that everything of God was His:
All things that are mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. (John 17:10).
JESUS claimed to be the supreme judge who will exercise all judgment
For the Father judges no one but he has given all judgment to the Son. (John 5:22).
However, there are at least 50 verses in the Bible that claim that Yahweh God will judge the earth.
JESUS claimed to be the one to separate the “sheep from the goats”
25:31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 25:32 All the nations will be assembled before him, and he will separate people one from another like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 25:33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. (Matthew 25:31-33).
However, the book of Ezekiel says that Yahweh God will do this
As for you, my sheep, this is what the sovereign Lord says: Look, I am about to judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats. (Ezekiel 34:17).
JESUS claimed to be the resurrection and the life
11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies, 11:26 and the one who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26).
He said that He would personally raise everyone from the dead (John 5:21; 6:39-40, 54). God is the only one who can say and do this (Deuteronomy 32:39).
JESUS can answer prayers and receives spirits at death
Whatever you will ask in my name; that will I (Jesus) do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you will ask anything in my name, I (Jesus) will do it. (John 14:13-14)
1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, 2 to the assembly of God which is at Corinth; those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, both theirs and ours:(1Corinthians 1:1-2)
55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 and said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” 57 But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed at him with one accord. 58 They threw him out of the city, and stoned him. The witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” 60 He kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, don’t hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he fell asleep. (Acts 7:55:60)
However, this is something that only God can do
And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.(Ecclesiastes 12:7)
I will bring the third part into the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say, ‘It is my people;’ and they will say, ‘Yahweh is my God. (Zechariah 13:9)
JESUS claimed to be Lord of the Sabbath
For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath. – Matthew 12:8 (cf. Mark 2:28; Luke 6:5)
Although the Bible indicates that God held such title
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: – Exodus 20:10 (cf. Leviticus 19:3, 30…; Deuteronomy 5:14)
JESUS claimed the ability to forgive sins
But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins (Matthew 9:6)
Even the Jews recognized that this was a function of God alone
2:5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 2:6 Now some of the experts in the law were sitting there, turning these things over in their minds: 2:7 “Why does this man speak this way? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” (Mark 2:5-7)
JESUS claimed that He would return in the clouds in glory and all will see it
And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. – Matthew 24:30 (cf. Revelation 1:7).
Moses, Isaiah and David made the same claim for Yahweh God
There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens to help you and on the clouds in his majesty. – Deuteronomy 33:26
Sing to God! Sing praises to his name! Extol him who rides on the clouds: to Yah, his name! Rejoice before him! – Psalm 68:4
Yahweh’s glory shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken it. – Isaiah 40:5
JESUS claimed to be the light of the world who provides salvation
Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”(John 8:12).
In the Psalms, David tells us that Yahweh God is our light and salvation
Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1).
JESUS also claimed to be the way to life
An assertion that is made for God
You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. (Psalm 16:11)
JESUS said that He was the one who searched the hearts and minds
I will kill her children with Death, and all the assemblies will know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts. I will give to each one of you according to your deeds. (Revelation 2:23)
Gives eternal life
And rewards men according to their works
For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds (Matthew 16:27)
All of these characteristics are found only in God
I, Yahweh, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings. (Jeremiah 17:10)
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep… 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and I’m known by my own (John 10:11, 14),
who searches for His sheep:
But he answered, “I wasn’t sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” (Matthew 15:24).
These are claims made of God in the Old Testament
Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. (Psalm 23:1)
For thus says the Lord Yahweh: Behold, I myself, even I, will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. (Ezekiel 34:11)
JESUS claimed to be the fountain of living water
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water…13 Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again,14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” (John 4:10, 13-14).
This is a clear reference to what Yahweh God said of Himself as recorded by the prophet Jeremiah
Yahweh, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be disappointed. Those who depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken Yahweh, the spring of living waters. (Jeremiah 17:13).
JESUS said He would give rest to those who come to Him
28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29).
The same claim is made of God in the book of Exodus
He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14)
JESUS claimed to send the Holy Spirit (Comforter/Counsellor)
Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don’t go away, the Counsellor won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.(John 16:7).
The same claim is made for God the Father
I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor, that he may be with you forever (John 14:16)
JESUS said that He raised Himself from the dead
17 Therefore the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again.18 No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down by myself. I have power to lay it down and I have power to take it again. I received this commandment from my Father.” (John 10:17-18).
Even though the Bible says that God did it
2:32 This Jesus God raised up, to which we all are witnesses…4:10 be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, in him does this man stand here before you whole. (Acts 2:32, 4:10)
JESUS accepts the title of God
One of the least favourite exchanges in the Bible from the cults’ perspective is the one that occurred between Jesus and Thomas after Jesus rose from the dead. Thomas, the ever-sceptical disciple, was unconvinced that Jesus had risen from the dead and wanted to see direct proof. However, when the Lord Jesus appeared to him, his only reaction was “My Lord and my God!”
Thomas answered and said to Him: “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.” (John 20:28-29)
What was Jesus’ reaction to the title of God? Did Jesus rebuke him for calling Him “God”? No! In fact, Jesus praised Thomas for his belief. And the belief that Thomas exhibited was that Jesus was Lord and God. If Jesus were not God, accepting such a statement for truth would be a grievous sin. Either Jesus is God or He would have to be a sinner!
JESUS claims to be God
The cults tend to acknowledge that Jesus and God were “one in purpose.” However, this is a rather weak claim. Every disciple of Jesus Christ has the goal of being “one in purpose” with God the Father. Even so, Jesus never used the word “purpose” in His claims of oneness with God.
“I and the Father are one.” The Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?” The Jews answered Him, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.” (John 10:30-33)
Obviously, the Jews did not think that this claim of being one with the Father referred to purpose. They knew that He was claiming equality with God, which is why they tried to stone Him for blasphemy.
In addition, Jesus said outright that He was Lord (John 13:13), and claimed to be the first and the last (Revelation 1:17-18; 2:8), an obvious trait reserved for God (Isaiah 44:6; revelation 1:8)
JESUS accepts worship reserved for God alone
Some of the most significant statements Jesus made regarding His deity actually involve an argument from silence – what Jesus did not say. In no less than 12 instances, Jesus was worshipped by various people – the wise men (Matthew 2:11), the disciples (Matthew 14:33; 28:9, 17; Luke 24:51-52), a leper (Matthew 8:2), a synagogue official (Matthew 9:18), a woman of Canaan (Matthew 15:22, 25), Mother of Zebedee’s children (Matthew 20:20), a blind man (John 9:38), angels (Hebrews 1:6), and everybody in heaven (Revelation 5:13-14).
The Bible clearly indicates that God alone is to be worshipped (Exodus 34:14, Deuteronomy 6:13). Even Jesus proclaimed this to Satan, when he tempted Him and demanded that He worship him (Matthew 4:10; Luke 4:8). The Jews (Pharisees) confronted Jesus to tell people to stop worshipping Him, but Jesus declined their request (Luke 19:37-40).
Some members of cults claim that the people who worshipped Jesus did so improperly. There are a number of examples where people attempted to worship the disciples (Acts 10:25-26), or angels (Revelation 19:10; 22:8-9) and were warned not to do so by the parties being worshipped. Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that Jesus is the archangel Michael. However, the Bible clearly indicates that angels are not to be worshipped (Colossians 2:18).
The problem arises that Jesus never told anyone to stop worshipping Him. If Jesus were not God, to say nothing in the face of worship would be a huge sin. So, if Jesus is not God, then He sinned in allowing others to worship Him. If He sinned, then Jesus could not even be the Savior, since the Savior must be without spot or blemish and Paul and Peter were wrong for saying that He never sinned (2Corinthians 5:21, 1Peter 2:22 respectively). By claiming that Jesus is not God, the cults turn Him into a liar and impostor.

For in him (Jesus) all the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily – Colossians 2:9
5 Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross. – Philippians 2:5-8
Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is great: God was revealed in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, and received up in glory. – 1Timothy 3:16
But of the Son he (the Father) says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your Kingdom. – Hebrews 1:8 (From Psalm 45:6)
Jesus never claimed to be God? It would seem from this large collection of sayings that Jesus made the claim to divinity constantly, in many different ways. Those who claim Jesus never said he was God are not reading His claims with the understanding of the true nature of God, as revealed in the Old and New Testaments. Jesus was constantly giving people advice. One of His favourite sayings is recorded below. It’s good advice for those who really want to know Jesus:
“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” – Matthew 11:15; 13:9, 43; Mark 4:9, 23; 7:16; Luke 8:8; 14:35; Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22; 13:9
Ironically, God said the same thing in the Old Testament (Ezekiel 3:27)
An Objection considered (Plagiarized):
It is unfortunate that there are many cult groups (Jehovah’s witnesses, Mormons…) that claim to believe in the Holy Bible and yet deny the position taken here regarding Jesus being Yahweh God. They assert that the New Testament applying Old Testament passages that speak of the functions and characteristics of Yahweh to Jesus does not prove that the latter is Yahweh God Almighty.
They seek to undermine the identification of Jesus with Yahweh by turning to places in the New Testament where Old Testament citations referring to specific individuals or groups are applied to others. Case in point:
For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’? Or again, ‘I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son’? – Hebrews 1:5
Here, the inspired author applies a passage to Jesus which initially referred to Solomon:
…Moreover, Yahweh declares to you that Yahweh will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. – 2 Samuel 7:11b-15
According to 1 Chronicles 28:6 this son was Solomon:
He said to me, ‘It is Solomon your son who shall build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.
Anti-Trinitarians also appeal to the following example:
This is he of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. – Matthew 11:11-15
Jesus identifies John as Elijah and even applies to the former a passage from Malachi 3:1, which in context initially referred to the sending of Elijah. Cf. Malachi 4:5-6
The anti-Trinitarian seeks to demonstrate from the above examples that the Trinitarian hasn’t proven his case regarding Jesus being Yahweh God. They claim that if Jesus is Yahweh God solely because the New Testament applies Yahweh passages to the Lord Jesus, then this means that Jesus is Solomon since a passage initially referring to the latter is applied to the former. This would also mean that John the Baptist was actually Elijah.
The anti-Trinitarian then reasons from this that the methodology used by Trinitarians to arrive at their belief in the deity of Christ is biblically inconsistent and invalid.
The confusion here should be apparent to the reader. It is obvious that the preceding examples do not mean that Jesus is Solomon or that John the Baptist was Elijah. Rather, the applications of these passages show that Jesus and John share certain characteristics or functions with Solomon and Elijah; yet these characteristics are not unique to either Solomon or Elijah. For instance, Solomon is called God’s son due to his being chosen to rule over Israel. Yet this intimate relationship was not something unique to Solomon, since all of the Davidic kings enjoyed filial relations with God, much like their father David:
Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one, and said: ‘I have granted help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him’… He shall cry to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’ And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. – Psalm 89:19-20, 26-27
In fact, this same Psalm goes on to apply the warning given to Solomon in case he sins to all of David’s royal offspring:
My steadfast love I will keep for him forever, and my covenant will stand firm for him. I will establish his offspring forever and his throne as the days of the heavens. If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my rules, if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments, then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes, but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness. I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David. His offspring shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me. Like the moon it shall be established forever, a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah – Psalm 89:28-37
Therefore, for Hebrews to apply to Christ a passage originally referring to Solomon doesn’t mean that Jesus is Solomon since the characteristics that are mentioned are not unique to Solomon. All the Davidic kings shared them.
In the case of John and Elijah, the latter was to be given the privilege of preparing the way for the coming of the Messiah, on honor which was bestowed on John also. It is in this sense that John is considered to be Elijah since he heralded the Messiah, the very thing that Elijah is suppose to do. The similarity is one of function, not one of identity.
But these examples are in no way parallel with the Yahweh passages due to the fact that these citations all focus on characteristics that distinguish Yahweh from all creation and from every other so-called god. Unlike the examples of Solomon and Elijah, the New Testament writers apply passages to Jesus that speak of the unique characteristics and functions of Yahweh. In other words, the New Testament writers claim that Jesus performs the works and has the very same attributes that are only true of Yahweh; no one else shares these characteristics or is able to perform these works. Hence, the similarities are not simply that of shared characteristics that others may also share in, but of identity since Jesus does those very things and has the same attributes which identify one as Yahweh God Almighty.
Here is an example of what I mean:
1. According to the Old Testament, Yahweh alone created and sustains all things. Cf. Job 9:8; Isaiah 44:24; Nehemiah 9:6
2. According to the New Testament, Jesus created and sustains all things. Cf. John 1:3, 10; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:2-3, 10-12
3. Therefore, Jesus is Yahweh God.
1. According to the Old Testament, Yahweh is immutable in contrast to creation which is mutable. Cf. Psalm 102:25-27; Malachi 3:6
2. According to the New Testament, Jesus is immutable. Cf. Hebrews 1:10-12; 13:8
3. Therefore, Jesus is Yahweh God.
The foregoing shows that the attempt to deny Jesus’ identification with Yahweh is based on a faulty approach which does nothing to undermine the Trinitarian position. It only exposes the logical fallacies of those who will not allow the Bible to speak for itself, but seek to read their unbiblical traditions and erroneous views into the text of Holy Scripture.
