1 Corinthians 1:1 – Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 2 unto the church of God which is AT CORINTH, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, CALLED TO BE SAINTS…

Many times, I was/am attacked for using the term, “SaintOfChrist”, as my username. I was/am reminded that the Bible admonishes me, as a Christian, to be humble. So I decided to write an article as to why I use this term because, clearly, many have no clue about who the saints are according to the Bible. (I’m not catholic, though I used to be, so trying to attack me based on Catholic teaching on this subject isn’t smart at all).

The term ‘saint’ or ‘holy’ in the Bible derives from: קדשׁ (qâdôsh) in Hebrew (Old Testament) and ἅγιος (Hagios) in Greek (New Testament) and it doesn’t mean as how it is wrongly interpreted by the Catholic Church and the people of the world today. According to the Bible, there are saints in the earth and they are not perfect people. They are only called perfect by the perfection of Christ in them, not because of what they did or do. Let’s see some passages from the Bible (There are many but I’m only going to quote those that directly support my claim):

۝ From the Old Testament

Psalm 16:3 – But TO THE SAINTS THAT ARE IN THE EARTH, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

Psalm 116:10 – Precious in the sight of the LORD is THE DEATH OF HIS SAINTS.

Psalm 79:2 – THE DEAD BODIES OF THY SERVANTS have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, THE FLESH OF THY SAINTS unto THE BEASTS OF THE EARTH 3 THEIR BLOOD (the saints’) have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them

Deuteronomy 33:2 – And he said, The LORD CAME FROM SINAI, and ROSE UP FROM SEIR unto them; he shined forth FROM MOUNT PARAN, and HE CAME WITH TEN THOUSANDS OF SAINTS: from his right hand went a fiery law FOR THEM (Saints). 3 Yea, HE LOVED THE PEOPLE; ALL HIS SAINTS are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.

2 Chronicles 6:41 – Now therefore arise, O LORD God, into thy resting place, thou, and the ark of thy strength: LET THY PRIEST, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation, and LET THY SAINTS REJOICE IN GOODNESS

۝ From the New Testament

Acts 9:13 – But Ananias replied, “Lord, I have heard from many people about this man, how much harm he has done to your SAINTS IN JERUSALEM…9:32 – Now as Peter was traveling around from place to place, he also came down to THE SAINTS WHO LIVED IN LYDDA…9:41 – He gave her his hand and helped her get up. 1 Corinthians 1:2 – to the church of God that is IN CORINTH, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, and CALLED TO BE SAINTS, with all those in every place who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.

2 Corinthians 1:1 – Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, WITH ALL THE SAINTS WHICH ARE IN ALL ACHAIA…9:12 – because the service of this ministry is not only PROVIDING FOR THE NEED OF THE SAINTS; but is also overflowing with many thanks to God…13:12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 ALL THE SAINTS GREET YOU.

Ephesians 1:1 – Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, TO THE SAINTS WHICH ARE AT EPHESUS, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus…5:3 – But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among YOU, AS BECOMETH SAINTS…6:18 – Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication FOR ALL SAINTS

Colossians 1:1 – From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 TO THE SAINTS, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ, AT COLOSSAE. Grace and peace to you from God our Father…4 since we heard about your faith in Christ Jesus and the love that you have FOR ALL THE SAINTS…26 that is, the mystery that has been kept hidden from ages and generations, but has now been REVEALED TO HIS SAINTS.

These passages among others are proofs that there are saints in the earth (Saints are not only those who are in heaven). Yes, other versions of the Bible don’t translate it as ‘saints’ but the original Hebrew used here is קדשׁ (qâdôsh) and the Greek ἅγιος (Hagios) respectively; which means saints or holy. It’s a description of God’s people (in heaven or on earth).

Our theme verse says, “…Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, CALLED TO BE SAINTS…” (1 Corinthians 1:2). This verse shows that ‘Saints’ are those who are ‘sanctified’ in Christ Jesus. Again, it’s the Greek ἅγιος (Hagios); which has the same meaning as קדשׁ (qâdôsh) from the Old Testament (Hebrew).

The word ‘sanctified’ here is the Greek, “ἁγιάζω (Hagiazō)”. It comes from ἅγιος (Hagios); to make holy, that is, (ceremonially) purify or consecrate: – hallow, be holy, sanctify. In other words, Christians are holy or saints because Christ has sanctified them in Himself, He is their Sanctifier ( 1 Corinthians 1:30); which means His holiness resides in them, that’s what makes them holy, not because of what they did or do. Mount Sinai and Horeb are called Holy Mountains, not because what they did but because the Holy God stepped on them. It was His holy presence that made them holy, the same way with God’s people. He indwells us (Christians) today (1 Corinthians 3:16); His indwelling presence makes us holy (saints).

۞ The saints are not perfect people as many think and believe:

And he (God) gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 FOR THE PERFECTING OF THE SAINTS, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ – Ephesians 4:11-12

This verse proves that saints aren’t perfect. Why would they need to be perfected if they already are perfect? So, the teaching of the Catholic Church and worldly belief in this subject are unbiblical and thus, shouldn’t be used to attack Christians. I am a saint of Christ, because I’m born again; born of His Holy Word (1 Peter 1:23; John 1:12-13); that’s why I call myself, “SaintOfChrist”! I hope I made myself clear.

I urge you right now to accept and receive Him as your Lord and Savior and become His saint as well, if you haven’t done that yet, by clicking this link. God bless you.
